Vegans jailed over death of baby
A vegan couple have been sentenced to life in prison by a US court over the death of their malnourished baby. The baby died six weeks after birth after being fed a diet largely made up of soy milk and organic apple juice.

Defence lawyers for Lamont Thomas and Jade Sanders said they had starved their child unintentionally by adhering to a strictly vegan diet.

But prosecutors in the US city of Atlanta said the couple had deliberately neglected their child.

“No matter how many times they want to say, ‘We’re vegans, we’re vegetarians,’ that’s not the issue in this case,” Prosecutor Chuck Boring is quoted by the Associated Press news agency as saying.

“The child died because he was not fed. Period,” he said.

Strict vegans adhere to a diet that avoids all animal products.

‘I loved my son’

Crown Shakur weighed 3.5lb (1.6kg) at the time of his death in April 2004.

The baby was born in a bathtub in the couple’s house.

Defence lawyer Brandon Lewis is quoted by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution newspaper as saying the couple did not take their child to a doctor because they feared hospitals were full of germs.

Defence lawyers said the couple did not realise the baby’s life was in danger until it was too late.

A jury deliberated for seven hours before delivering its verdict on 2 May.

Sentencing the couple, the judge said the murder verdict made the life sentence mandatory.

Jade Sanders told the judge: “I loved my son – and I did not starve him.”

According to the AP news agency, Lamont Thomas complained that he had not known he was being tried for a felony – rather than the lesser offence of a misdemeanour.

“We had no idea involuntary manslaughter was a felony. We were told for three years this was a misdemeanour,” he reportedly said.

“It takes money to prove this wasn’t a felony – money we don’t have.”

Has been practiced on every continent by people on every level of cultural complexity, from hunters and gatherers to high civilization, including our own ancestors. Rather than being an exception, it has been the rule. Statistically, the US ranks high on the list of countries whose inhabitants kill their children. For infants under the age of 1 year, the American homicide rate is 11th in the world, while for ages 1 – 4 it is 1st and for ages 5 – 14 it is 4th. From 1968 to 1975, infanticide of all ages accounted for 3.2% of all homicides in the US.

Many new mothers experience a mild depression called the baby blues. Postpartum blues usually begin 1 or 2 days after delivery and can last up to 3 weeks. These out-of-control feelings can add to anxiety and fear.

Purephrial psychosis, the rarest form of Post Partum illness affects 1% – 3% of all new mothers, 1 to 3 cases for every 1,000 births. 70% of new mothers who suffer psychosis have no history of psychiatric illness. It is the most severe form of the illness and can cause a break with reality in the new mother.

Is Garrett Wilson a loving father and a terrific husband? Or a relentless womanizer who murdered 2 of his children for insurance money? In 1987, Wilson’s 5 month-old son, Garrett Michael, died. Missy Anastasi, Wilson’s wife at the time, suspected foul play. But a medical examiner ruled that the baby had died from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Seven years later, Anastasi discovered that Wilson had secretly divorced her to marry another woman, and had another child. Convinced that Wilson was a killer, she asked police to look into her son’s death. What they found shocked them. Can police gather enough evidence? Read Chapter 1 of Adrian Havill’s gripping examination of the Garrett Wilson case.– Part II - Part IIIPart IVPart V

While Innocents Slept: A Story of Revenge, Murder and Sids by Adrian Havill — Death seemed to be part of Garrett Wilson’s life. Both of his parents had died by the time he was in his early twenties. So friends shrugged when sadly, an infant daughter, and then a son, succumbed to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Six years later, after he divorced his wife, Missy, and married another woman, his former spouse became convinced that their child’s passing was anything but natural. Was it cold-blooded murder by Garrett, or a quest for revenge by his ex-wife? Missy’s own investigation led to Garrett Wilson’s arrest and eventual trial. Havill takes us through each stage of this intricate and chilling story all the way to the courtroom, where the jury’s stunning verdict is given.

Not without precedent — There have been other filicide cases like that of Andrea Pia Yates. Courts nationwide have numerous examples of women of killing their children.

Breaking Point Suzy Spencer
Explores the case of Andrea Yates, the Houston, Texas, mother suspected in the deaths of her five children, ages six months to seven years, whom she allegedly drowned in the family home’s bathtub in June 2001.

Louise Woodward,19 – Became so impatient with 8-month-old Matthew Eappen’s crying that she shook him violently to quiet him. She slammed the infant against a hard surface (floor) to silence him. Eappen suffered a fractured skull and died from his injury.

William and Denise Fischer of rural Westchester County, NY, hired Swiss au pair Olivia Riner, 20, to care for their infant daughter, Kristie. In December 1991, while they were at work, there was a fire in the nursery that killed the 3-month-old while she slept in her bedroom. She was charred beyond recognition. Riner, the only witness to the crime and prime suspect, made no attempt to save the burning baby. Flammable solvent had been poured around the baby and the bed of an adult stepsister who also resided in the home. Rine was acquitted though the despondent nanny, who had been in the US only 1 month, most likely committed the crime.

Why They Kill Their Newborns - 18-year-old college couple, Amy Grossberg and Brian Peterson, delivered their baby in a motel room, killed him and left his body in a dumpster. 18-year-old, Melissa Drexler, arrived at her high-school prom, locked in a bathroom stall, she gave birth to a boy and left him dead in a garbage can. Next: she touched herself up and returned to the dance floor. A grand jury indicted her for murder. New Jersey Prom Girl, Melissa Drexler and the McCaughey septuplets are two examples pointing to a culture of ambivalence in the US around the conception and care of children.

In Los Angeles County in one year there were 10 newborns left to die; several summers ago, 3 were discarded in Southern California beach communities. In Monmouth County, NJ, where Drexler left her baby, there were 12 abandoned babies in the past 10 years. 4 New Jersey teenagers have abandoned babies in the past 6 months.

How to ignore an attempted infanticide -After twin newborn girls were found dead in the pit of an outhouse October 9, 1994, Princeton RCMP launched a homicide investigation that continues today. “The autopsy determined they were alive when they were born,” says Constable Ray Kinloch. “They probably died as a result of being thrown down the hole there and just left.”

In 1987, Mary Beth Tinning of Schenectady, New York, was convicted of killing one of her children. Prosecutors were unable to prove Ms. Tinning was responsible for the deaths of her eight other children, none of whom lived beyond age 5. She drove a school bus in Schenectady, New York. She even worked as a nurse’s aide in a pediatric ward. But this seemingly normal woman killed her ninth child by smothering it and is suspected of doing the same to her other eight children–while escaping suspicion for more than a decade.

From Cradle to Grave: The Short Lives and Strange Deaths of Marybeth Tinning’s Nine Children

Between 1949 and 1968, Marie Noe had 10 children: 7 girls and 3 boys. Two of the children lived just one month. One died after 13 days, another after 14 months. Not one lived to see a second birthday. In all except two of the deaths, Mrs. Noe said the babies had died while sleeping when she was home alone with them. Eventually the deaths were blamed on Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, also known as SIDS. Philadelphia investigators had been waiting for decades to hear Marie Noe, 70, admit she smothered 8 of her babies in the ’40s, ’50s and ’60s. She made that confession in a small courtroom, pleading guilty to 8 counts of 2nd-degree murder, while Arthur, 77, wept in the gallery.

Adelson. 1961;264:1345-49). The same themes of passion, corruption, and the death of sweet children reverberate through the pages of The Death of Innocents: A True Story of Murder, Medicine, and High-Stakes Science.

Deformed babies killed for super race

THE North Korean regime’s obsession with racial purity has led to the killing of disabled infants and forced abortions for women suspected of conceiving their babies by Chinese fathers, according to a growing body of testimony from defectors.

The latest description of Kim Jong-il’s policy of state eugenics came from a North Korean doctor, Ri Kwang-chol, who escaped last year and told a forum in Seoul that babies with deformities were killed soon after birth.

“There are no people with physical defects in North Korea,” Dr Ri said. Such babies were put to death by medical staff and buried quickly, he claimed. He denied ever committing the act himself.

Exiles in Seoul said Dr Ri was now keeping a low profile, fearing retaliation by North Korean agents, who have assassinated foes in the South Korean capital before. But his account added to the evidence that the Kim family dictatorship is founded on mystical notions of Korean racial superiority rather than Marxism – a reality that explains its deepening estrangement from China.

Along the 1370km border, North Korean women refugees have emerged with stories that speak of the regime’s preoccupation with “deviant” sexual relations and its predisposition to violence in dealing with them.

One such account came from a 30-year-old woman who calls herself Han Myong-suk. She escaped twice and reached a safe haven in an undisclosed third country within the past year thanks to Helping Hands Korea, an American Christian group.

She said she was sold by traffickers to a Chinese farmer near the Great Wall, and was five months pregnant by him when she was caught by the Chinese police and deported back to North Korea. There she was held in one of three female detention centres, which have been identified in the towns of Sinuju, Onsong and Chongin.

Her account was taken down by Tim Peters, an American Christian activist who founded the group.

“I defied the order to abort the fetus the prison authorities contemptuously called a ‘Chinese Chink’ and was badly beaten and kicked in my belly by a guard. His name was Hwang Myong-dong,” she said.

One week later, said Ms Han, she was led to a prison clinic “where in a most blunt manner they extracted the dead child from my body”.

Ms Han survived the depraved conditions of a labour camp for several years before her release and eventual second escape. Her story represented important corroboration of a practice that was first detailed in a report in 2003 for the pressure group US Committee of Human Rights in North Korea that was compiled by David Hawk, a human rights investigator.

Mr Hawk found “extreme phenomena of repression … unique to North Korea” and concluded that its regime practised “ethnic infanticide”. He traced eight female witnesses who gave distressing accounts of child murder.

One took place at the women’s detention centre in Sinuiju, a border zone visible across the Yalu River from the Chinese city of Dandong.

Choi Yong-hwa, 28, described how she was made to accompany a heavily pregnant woman, who had also been returned across the bridge from China, to a clinic where doctors induced labour.

After the infant was born, Ms Choi said she and other women stood by in disbelief as it was suffocated with a wet towel. The mother passed out.

A 66-year-old grandmother also testified to witnessing the deaths of babies at Sinuiju, two of them healthy boys born at full term. The first belonged to a 28-year-old woman called Lim.

The witness was holding the newborn in a blanket when a guard grabbed him by a leg and threw him into a large box lined with plastic.

Death for dollars? Ukrainian infants likely killed to harvest stem cells!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Evidence from a video obtained by the BBC points to the stomach-churning possibility that healthy babies born in a Ukrainian maternity hospital were taken their mothers and then murdered so that large amounts of stem cells could be harvested from their brains and bone marrow. A spokesman for the hospital denies it is connected in any way with the use of stem cells — but one Ukrainian couple never saw their newborn daughter again after being told all was well and then told later she had died.

In the Ukraine, investigators are exploring the possibility that healthy infants and preborns were killed for stem-cell experimentation. It is speculated that the babies’ organs were extracted after allegedly being stolen from mothers by staff at Maternity Hospital Number Six in the eastern city of Kharkov.

The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) claims to have a video showing the autopsy examination of 30 infants and fetuses that were exhumed from a cemetery used by the Ukrainian maternity hospital. The video was also turned over to the Council of Europe who is now carrying out its own investigation as a response to about 300 families who are coming forward with charges against the hospital for allegedly taking and killing their newborns.

Pictures from the autopsies reveal tiny dismembered bodies with missing organs and brains. Since dismemberment of bodies is not a standard post-mortem practice, it is likely the babies were harvested for the high amounts of stem cells in their brains and bone marrow.

It is a recognized practice in the Ukraine, the stem-cell capital of the world, to take stem cells from aborted fetuses with the mothers’ consent. Due to the increasing worldwide demand for stem cells, it is possible healthy newborns are now being used to feed this demand. These healthy babies mysteriously “die” following a successful birth.

Such is likely the case for Ukrainian couple Dimitry and Olena Stulnev who had their baby at Maternity Hospital Number Six. “I gave birth to a healthy girl,” Olena told the Daily Mail. “She was crying and moving her hands and legs. I was shown the baby. After that the girl was taken away. They told me everything was OK, and I could see her the next day.”

Olena never saw her baby again. She was told the next day that her baby was dead and given conflicting stories as to the reason for the child’s death. The couple began investigating the death of their child but got nowhere. The more they pried, the less information they got.

Even today, Ukrainian authorities and hospital staff remain tight-lipped about the suspected use of newborns for stem-cell research.

According to BBC investigative reporter Matthew Hill, “The Ukrainian authorities deny any conspiracy and refute claims that there is a trade in stem cells taken from stolen babies.”

“No work in this hospital is connected with the use of cells,” Dr. Larysa Nazarenko told Hill. Nazarenko is the chief doctor at Maternity Hospital Number Six.

Although speculations are being disputed by those accused of committing these atrocities, Hill thinks the silence will be broken in February when the Council of Europe returns to Kharkov to continue its investigation of what has already become a horrifying insight into the stem-cell controversy.

“One of the things that we have been concerned about for years is the fact that, by pushing embryonic stem-cell research, we’re looking at a situation that is bound to use human beings as fodder for the experiments,” said Dr. Janice Crouse, director of the Beverly LaHaye Institute at Concerned Women for America (CWA).

Bioethicist Wesley Smith believes the demand for hundreds of millions of eggs and stem cells will lead to fetal farming.

“In order to get the millions and millions of eggs that would be required, poor women in Bangladesh, in Congo, in other destitute nations would be seen by biotechnologists as so many egg farms ripe for the harvest,” Smith explained. “This commoditization of human life is pernicious ….”

Sadly, it appears to be motivated by big business and financial gain…………

Teen Learns Fate For Pregnant Girlfriend’s Assault
Baseball Bat Used To Cause Miscarriage

POSTED: 10:47 am EDT September 30, 2005

A Richmond, Mich., teenager who authorities said hit his girlfriend in the stomach with a baseball bat to end an unwanted pregnancy learned his sentence Thursday.

The teenager, whose name was not released, received a sentence of 200 hours of community service, two years of probation and $200 worth of fines, Local 4 reported.

After an investigation, police determined that prior to a miscarriage in November 2004, the teenager, with the consent of his girlfriend, attempted to abort the fetus she was carrying.

Macomb County Prosecutor Eric Smith said the teenager hit his pregnant girlfriend in the abdomen with a wooden baseball bat every other day for three weeks.

Unbelievable! If this was a dog he would be sitting behind bars for years. I hope someone is getting these kids some help because this was just sick and then to have BOTH of them get a slap on the wrist:cry

A 37-year-old taxi driver in Maryland was charged earlier this month with murdering a newborn. Days before, she’d been rushed to a hospital, bleeding — and denied being pregnant even though doctors found a placenta in her womb.

Her deceased day-old son was discovered wrapped in a towel below her bathroom sink. The murder charge, however, stems from another baby’s death in 2003 or 2004. Investigators found the remains of three other newborns on her property.

Few crimes generate greater public reaction than neonaticide: when a mother kills her baby, or leaves it to die, on the day she gives birth. We are repelled, yet mesmerized, as details emerge. How could a woman deny being pregnant for so many months? How could no one notice? How could a mother murder her newborn?

As a forensic psychologist, I have evaluated 32 mothers who were charged with killing one or more of their children. Fourteen-year-old “Cathy” was one. She had been repeatedly molested by her stepfather, gave birth alone in her bedroom, and then threw her newborn against the wall. “Edna,” a college freshman, was so indecisive about ending her pregnancy that she suffocated her minutes-old baby in an act of delayed abortion.

Cathy and Edna denied and hid their pregnancies, common in neonaticide cases, particularly among teens pregnant for the first time. That was also true in the recent Anaheim case in which a 17-year-old visiting from Indiana allegedly gave birth in a Denny’s restroom; police said that neither her parents nor her boyfriend knew she was pregnant. (That baby was found alive in a trash can and hospitalized; the mother has been charged with felony child abuse and neglect.)

Teenagers’ pregnancy denial may involve naive beliefs that morning sickness and weight gain are because of illness or excessive eating. But more often, denial is fed by shame over having intercourse, anxiety about enraged parents, fear of giving birth, or resentment about ruined future plans.

Pregnancy denial among adults often involves hiding infidelity, excessive ambivalence about abortion and even guilt about neonaticidal thoughts. For either age group, pregnancy caused by rape, especially incest, may produce realistic fears of retaliation by the rapist; denial may be a form of post-traumatic amnesia.

Pregnancy denial gives women some temporary emotional relief, but if it persists, it can cause lasting damage. The woman avoids prenatal care and delays making critical decisions about termination, adoption or motherhood. It’s rare, but a woman who keeps pregnancy secret for nine months is at much greater risk of killing the newborn when she is overwhelmed by the emotional and physical stresses of giving birth alone. If the baby is subsequently found, alive or dead, the woman’s continuing denial is often a desperate attempt to escape felony charges of child abandonment or murder.

How often does this happen? We don’t know. Neonaticides are among the least-well-documented deaths in the U.S. Many bodies — left in trash bins or buried in remote places — may never be found.

Mom, 4 daughters found hanging

Police in east Texas are working to explain the inexplicable: the hangings of a mother and her four children.

The mother, Gilberta Estrada Vega, 25, was found dead in a bedroom closet early Tuesday alongside three of her daughters, ages 5, 3 and 22 months, Parker County Sheriff Larry Fowler said. An 8-month-old baby girl also was hanged but survived.

The heart-breaking scene was in the Oak Hill mobile home park just outside Hudson Oaks, a city of about 2,000 people 20 miles west of Fort Worth.

Evidence pointed to a murder-suicide, but the investigation continues, Fowler said. The sheriff said the trailer’s door had been tied shut from the inside with a piece of string, and he said the aunt told police Estrada had been depressed. He said the bodies were hanging by pieces of cloth from a rod in the closet.

The children’s father, who did not live with them, was interviewed by police, but is not currently a suspect, Fowler said. Estrada had gotten a protective order against him in August, he said.

The children’s aunt, whose name was not released by police, found the bodies about 6:30 a.m. after her sister did not appear at her restaurant job, he said.

She heard the 8-month-old making sounds, released her from her noose, ran from the house with her and called 911, Fowler said.

“It’s an absolute miracle” the baby survived, he said.

“She is in very good condition,” Winifred King, spokeswoman for Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth, said.

A similar killing recently shook Montgomery County in Maryland. On April 3, Gerardo Roque killed his 2-year-old daughter and 1-year-old son by hanging them from tree limbs before committing suicide the same way, Montgomery County police said.

“This was certainly one of the most difficult cases to investigate,” said Lucille Baur, spokeswoman for the Montgomery County police department.

“It’s heart-wrenching.”

Hudson Oaks city administrator Robert Hanna said the city has offered counseling to employees who responded to the crime scene.

In July 2002, another Hudson Oaks resident, Dee Perez shot and killed her 9- and 10-year-old sons and 4-year-old daughter before killing herself.

“We’re not looking forward to reopening those wounds,” Hanna said.

“Overall in the community, there’s a feeling of tragic loss.”
